Personal Artistic Biography

Abraham Mejía was born in El Paso, Texas, and his studio is currently located in the heart of the city, within a 1920s building that has become a central element in the evolution of his work over the past three years.

As a multidisciplinary artist, Abraham’s passion for unraveling the mysteries of the world around him began at an early age while exploring his parents’ antiques gallery.
In 2017, he completed his academic journey with a degree in architecture, a significant milestone in his professional development. The following year, he lived and worked with the Tarahumara community in the Sierra Tarahumara, Chihuahua, where he played an integral role in building a children's home. In this project, he was not only responsible for the design but also actively participated in the construction, driven by a natural curiosity to understand the process and a deep interest in vernacular architecture, which captivated him at the time.

Later that same year, Abraham moved to Alpine, Texas, to work with architect Steve Velardo, continuing his pursuit to deepen his knowledge of adobe architecture. These formative experiences have had a profound impact on his growth as an artist, as Abraham believes they are intricately linked to his artistic perspective. They have undoubtedly shaped how he observes, thinks, and develops his work.

Questions such as: How does light interact with matter, space, and color? In what ways are we influenced by light? Why do colors evoke such strong emotional responses? Is color merely a matter of perception? These are some of the fundamental themes Abraham seeks to explore through his art. These ideas, which first sparked his interest during his architectural training, now play a pivotal role in his artistic vision.

Artistic Statement

My work aims to explore the metaphysical and spiritual aspects through matter and its interaction with light, based on the belief that this phenomenon holds a profound transformative power within the fabric of memory and the psyche of the individual. Understanding that color is a manifestation of light, and that light itself is an autonomous and ever-changing medium, my work focuses on replicating the light behaviors I am exposed to daily, from sunrise to sunset, in my studio located in the heart of El Paso, Texas. In each piece, I translate an event I have experienced, such as the intense light pouring through my window, the rays of light filtering into distant corners of my studio reflected from the surrounding buildings, or the color changes that occur minute by minute in the vast skies that blanket the city. What drives my creative explorations is the observation of the movement of light and its interaction with us, our buildings and nature. Through materials such as metal, acrylic, paper, and wood, I seek to give prominence to light, recognizing its parallel and constant presence in our everyday lives. Each work also invites a contemplative pause, a moment of stillness, and the cultivation of a deep appreciation for the natural essence of the things around us.
